Winter Tips Published Nov. 28, 2007 By Base Housing Office WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. -- Military Family Housing Winter Tips With the arrival of cooler weather, please remember these very important tips. Water hoses should be removed from outside water faucets and crawl space vents closed when outside temperatures fall below 32 degrees. Failure to do so may cause pipes to freeze and burst inside the house. Keep the thermostat set at 60 degrees or more during the winter months to prevent water line freeze-ups. Ensure leaves, paper and other debris is removed from window wells to prevent drains located under the gravel from becoming clogged and causing water to leak into the basement. Snow Removal in Family Housing Military Family Housing Residents are reminded to remove vehicles from the streets and into driveways to facilitate snow removal and avoid accidental damage to vehicle. Occupants are responsible for removing snow from their steps, driveways, sidewalks and fire hydrants located near your home within 24 hours of snowfall. Seasonal Decorations Lights may not be attached to housing units with any type of nail, screw or other fastener that pierces the roof or siding in any way. Plastic clips are available commercially to safely attach lights to roofs, gutters or windows. Decorations may not be placed where it would require individuals to get on top of the carport or roof. Seasonal decorations in family housing are permitted to be lit between the hours of 1800-2300 from the week after Thanksgiving through New Year's Day. Seasonal decorations must be removed no later than the second week of January. They may not remain on the house year-round.
