Whiteman Blood Drive
A collection specialist with the American Red Cross uses a specialty tool to seal a blood bag tube during a blood drive at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., Jan. 13, 2016. After the blood is collected each donation is scanned into a computer database, tested for infectious diseases, stored in a refrigerator at 6 degrees Celsius for up to 42 days and distributed to one of 2,600 hospitals across the U.S .
