Chief Choice Award
U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Justin Heupel, 509th Maintenance Squadron low observables technician, receives a Chiefs' Choice award at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., Oct. 31, 2014. Heupel was handpicked as LO’s crew lead in the repair of the Spirit of Texas, tail number 88-0328. This Bomber sustained damage due to a lighting strike in-flight. Heupel led a crew of up to 20 technicians replacing the wingtip coatings and other major coatings to restore the aircraft to its original configuration. This has involved thousands of man hours and tens of thousands of dollars to complete. His superior performance as a Crew Lead ensured the successful completion of this massive repair effort.
