64 years in the making: WWII Vet receives Distinguished Flying Cross
WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. - Edward Ireland, a World War II veteran, speaks during a ceremony Dec. 6 at the Royal Oaks Golf Course here. Mr. Ireland was formally presented the Distinguished Flying Cross for actions during his service more than 60 years ago. Mr. Ireland was awarded the medal more than six decades ago, but never received it in a formal setting due to on-going missions during World War II. "You scheduled everything around the combat duty. That's what we were there for," Mr. Ireland said. "We weren't there for any pomp and ceremony, we had missions to fly."(U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Jessica Snow)
