Heritage restoration
WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. – The Whiteman Heritage Foundation is restoring this World War II-era CG-4A troop/cargo glider to be displayed at Whiteman. CG-4A gliders could carry 13 soldiers and their equipment or either a jeep, a quarter-ton truck, or a 75-mm howitzer loaded through the upward-hinged nose section. They were normally towed by C-46s and C-47s at speeds up to 150 mph. CG-4As went into operation in July, 1943, during the Allied invasion of Sicily. They also participated in the D-Day assault on France along with Holland, Germany and the China-Burma-India Theater. (U.S. Air Force photo/Chief Master Sgt. Brian Hornback)
