I'm up...They see me...I'm down
WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. -- Senior Airman Jesus Barraza, 509th Security Forces Squadron combat arms instructor, demonstrates how to use the M249 machine gun here Jan. 31. The M249 is gas operated and air-cooled with a quick-change barrel, allowing the gunner to rapidly replace an overheated or jammed barrel. A folding bipod is attached near the front of the gun. It can be fed from both linked ammunition and standard magazines, like those used in M16 and M4 rifles. This allows the gunner to use the magazines as an emergency source of ammunition in the event that the gunner runs out of linked rounds. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Alexandra M.
