Free 24/7 online tutoring for students in military families Published Nov. 4, 2013 By Staff Sgt. Brigitte N. Brantley 509th Bomb Wing Public Affairs WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. -- Moving around the world as a military dependent is a fact of life, but one Department of Defense-funded program aims to make such transitions as easy as possible. The "Tutor.com for U.S. Military Families" program gives students in military families free online tutoring and homework help -- anytime, anywhere. The student and tutor work together in an online classroom which features an interactive whiteboard, file sharing and instant messaging. Because tutors are online 24/7 and no appointments are needed, students around the world can get one-on-one help as needed. "Our tutors give students consistent high-quality tutoring to ensure they stay on track, whether they are struggling in Algebra I or want to excel in AP classes," said Pamela Brehm, the website's director for U.S. military families. Tutors provide help with homework, studying, test preparation, proofreading, essay-writing and more. Help is available in all core subjects, including algebra, geometry, calculus, physics, earth science, language arts, history and AP-level courses. "The program is especially useful when the children are younger, have special needs or are working on a subject the parent isn't familiar with," said Diane Munley, 509th Force Support Squadron school liaison officer. "The tutors are able to teach the subjects in a different way. It's also useful when a parent is deployed or works late and can't give that hands-on support." Parents also have the option to log in and work alongside their children. Dependent children of the following Air Force groups are eligible to use this tutoring program: active-duty personnel, deployed Air National Guard and Reserve personnel and Air Force Wounded Warriors. Inactive and part-time Air National Guard and Reserve personnel as well as their dependents are also eligible.
