Atomic Luau celebrates 63 years of unparalleled support Published July 23, 2008 By Staff Sgt. Jason Barebo 509th Bomb Wing Public Affairs WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo -- On August 8th, organizations across Whiteman will host the Atomic Luau, a day-long celebration of fun, food, prizes and a special guest appearance by .38 Special. Previously known as the Enlisted Luau, this year the Whiteman Air Force Base Enlisted Top 3 and the Luau Planning Committee are opening the event to the entire base, said Master Sgt. Brian McGee, 509th Logistics Readiness Squadron. "The Enlisted Luau is a long standing Whiteman tradition that was created as a means to celebrate the accomplishments of the men and women who defend against America's enemies on a daily basis," Sergeant McGee said. The slogan of this year's Atomic Luau is "509th Bomb Wing: Celebrating 63 years of unparallel support in defending and protecting America and her allies against all enemies" "The primary difference is this celebration takes the place of the Enlisted Luau as all officers, enlisted, civilians and their families are invited to attend," said 1st Lt. Robert Fekete, 509th LRS and Company Grade Officers' Committee vice president. The is the first year the CGOC has been involved as previously the event was specific to the enlisted community. "The CGOC is not only giving back to the Whiteman community through the planning process and donation of funds, but we're also using this opportunity to form even stronger working relationships with the other professional organizations on base," Lt. Fekete said. "And of course have some fun in the process." The Atomic Luau is filled with several events for everyone including live music, bouncy castles, a rapid fire obstacle course, dunk tanks, gladiator joust, games and an appearance by 80's rock band .38 Special. The event will also include free food and beverages. "This is a "no-fly" day for the base and an alternate duty location for both military and civilians wishing to attend," Sergeant McGee said. Wrist bands will be required to attend the Atomic Luau. The bands are sold by all committee members as well as each squadron First Sergeant.
