Several cities across the nation made it their mission to represent patriotism by entering in the City of the Year contest. The competition was hosted by the 40 & 8 organization and Sedalia, Mo., was announced the 2010 winner, Aug. 12.

"We found Sedalia deserved the award because of how the city goes out of its way to recognize veterans," said Archie Boyette Sous director, special awards. "They have 17 annual affairs that recognize veterans which were the critical aspects we were looking for in a city. Sedalia works with active-duty military and distinguishes the contributions to the community."

Tony Gallagher, 40 & 8 organization commander of the Voiture Locale 333, nominated Sedalia for the award in May.

"Sedalia is a sterling example of a 'City of the Year' in that our citizens take great pride in honoring our active-duty and veteran military men, women and families not just on the normal observed holidays, but continually throughout the year," Mr. Gallagher said. "Whether it's a simple handshake, thank you to a father of three military sons, or a new event for Sedalia, we go about the everyday life understanding the efforts of our military."

Sedalia is exceedingly fortunate to house some of the most active, vibrant veterans and military organizations in the country, including the American Legion Post 16, the American Legion Post 642, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2591 and, of course, the Voiture 333 of the 40 & 8 according to the nomination.

"Being named the 40 & 8's 'City of the Year' is an honor and a privilege," said Sedalia Mayor Mary Elaine Horn. "Our community takes great pride in providing opportunities to support our active and retired service men and women, including their families. Patriotism is part of the way of life in Sedalia and one of the many things that makes our city a wonderful place to call home. We are very proud to have received this recognition."

"The military allows us to the opportunity to pursue our personal American Dream," said Mr. Gallagher. "On behalf of the 40 & 8, we gladly accept the award and look forward to contributing to the military and Sedalia."

Mayor Horn accepted the award in Springfield, Ill., at the 91st Promenade National ceremony, Sept. 10, alongside members of Voiture 333.
