WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. -- International Nurses Day is celebrated annually on May 12 to raise awareness of the critical role nurses play in society. International Nurses Day marks the end of National Nurses and Medical Technicians Week, which starts on May 6 and ends on May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday, who is widely known as the founder of modern nursing. For the U.S. military, it is an opportunity to recognize the contributions of the women and men serving as nurses since the American Revolution to today. Nurses and medical technicians work behind the scenes ordering and renewing medicine, reading and communicating test results, and relaying and providing health information and education to patients. For more than two centuries, military nurses have served America, ensuring that those in uniform are medically ready to deploy anywhere around the globe on a moment’s notice.
