Gen. Timothy Ray, Commander of U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command, spoke to more than 600 people in academia, government, military, and industry of 11 nations, July 31, at U.S. Strategic Command’s annual deterrence symposium.

He explained the command’s focus on “competing, deterring and winning” against threats in the 21st century. He noted that deterrence is only one aspect of U.S. nuclear business, explaining how the command is also focused on “warfighting and winning.”

Drawing parallels and examining differences of America’s airpower role in strategic deterrence from the 1940s, 1980s, and today, he offered praise of Allies and partners globally navigating many different geo-strategic challenges.

He focused on key aspects of the most recent National Defense Strategy, highlighting China and Russia and their effects on global order, and military competition.

This tenth annual symposium draws from academic, government, military and international experts, with the goal of exploring a broad range of deterrence issues during a single event.
