2nd Lt. Brookelyn Messenger, weapons flight commander with the 393rd Bomber Generation Squadron, has been recognized as one of the Air Force’s top athletes, earning the Air Force Global Strike Command Athlete of the Year award for her achievements in volleyball.

“When the award came down, I was recommended to apply,” Messenger said. “I submitted a short write-up highlighting my volleyball accomplishments and my work performance.”

Messenger has competed at various levels, including the Whiteman team, the Department of the Air Force (DAF) Sports program, and local tournaments across Missouri. Her accolades include being named MVP at a local base tournament and earning a spot on the DAF Sports All-Tournament Team, an honor given to the top performers across all services.

“Being selected again for the DAF team this year was a huge honor,” Messenger said. “I think what stood out most was being named MVP at the Whiteman tournament and making the All-Tournament Team for DAF Sports.”

Messenger’s journey began at an open gym session at Whiteman, where she connected with other athletes and later joined leagues and tournaments in Kansas City. That local involvement opened doors at the DAF level.

“I’m incredibly thankful for my leadership,” Messenger said. “They supported me every step of the way—encouraging me to apply and letting me compete.”

Messenger encourages others to take advantage of the many Air Force sports programs, especially those recently reintroduced by DAF.

“If you have a hobby or sport you love, get involved,” Messenger said. “Intramurals are a great way to start, and we have a strong, supportive sports community here. People are willing to teach if you’re willing to learn.”
