Spirit Café: Young adults' playground Published April 6, 2010 By Airman first class Cody H. Ramirez 509 Bomb Wing Public Affairs WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. -- Nestled in the back of the Whiteman Community Center is an area perfect for Airmen looking for a spot to stay entertained, to meet new people, and to enjoy home-cooked meals. The Spirit Café hosts a wide variety of activities, ranging from board games to electronic entertainment. More than a dozen TVs with varying connections to Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and even Super Nintendo, are scattered around the café. Rockband and karaoke are expected to be added to the café's arsenal sometime in the near future. "If Airmen have a popular request for an item, we try to get it," said Mrs. Amanda Lavender, café coordinator. Pool, foosball, air hockey, ping pong and more, are available for those who prefer more hands-on activities. On Friday nights, when the wear and tear of the intensive thumb exercises drains the Airmen's nutrients, the café hosts a free dinner. "The café is arranged to be a 'home away from home' for Airmen," said Mrs. Lavender. "We want Airmen to always feel comfortable utilizing anything we have to offer." With assistance from the base chapel, community center and help outside the base, the café has financial support for a renovation. Plans for the renovation are being finalized and can be expected sometime in the next few months, but no specific date has been made yet, said Airman 1st Class Carlin O. Leslie, head café-volunteer from the 509th Bomb Wing. These changes will bring a new division in the café. "The television will be put in a separate room from the gaming," said Airman Leslie. "Couches and tables will accommodate those who need a quiet environment to read and study." In addition, everything in the kitchen is being stripped and replaced. "The floor-tile will be the only remnant of the prior kitchen," said Airman Leslie. "A new stove, refrigerator and deep freezer will be added. Basically, the whole kitchen will be new." Mrs. Lavender said she hopes with all the upcoming changes, the café will offer much more to Airmen. "We love to see new faces and everyone is welcome." said Mrs. Lavender. The cafe's open hours vary. Party or event rooms are available for reservation from the community center. For additional information, call: (660) 687-5617.
