Staff Sgt. Dexter Brown, 509th Logistics Readiness Squadron, received the Whiteman Spirit Award from Brig. Gen. Greg Biscone, 509th Bomb Wing commander, Aug. 27.

Maj. Mark Lynch, 509th LRS commander, nominated Sergeant Brown for the award.
"On July 25, Sergeant Brown responded to a house fire at 826 Langley Drive in base housing," Major Lynch said.

The house fire occurred at his next-door neighbor's, where Sergeant Brown proceeded to use a fire extinguisher to douse the flames.

In the process, Sergeant Brown suffered the effects of smoke inhalation and was sent to Warrensburg for immediate treatment. He was released later that evening after observation, Major Lynch said.

"Sergeant Brown is a true hero, in every sense of the word," Major Lynch added. "He exemplifies the can-do attitude and selfless service that is the Whiteman Spirit."
