Doug Stevens, 509th Communications Squadron, received the Whiteman Spirit Award from Brig. Gen. Garrett Harencak, 509th Bomb Wing commander, Jan. 7.

John Moskwa, 509th Communications Squadron nominated Mr. Stevens for the award.

"Mr. Stevens is a civilian contractor who has been maintaining the Whiteman Air Force Base telephone switch for the past 18 years," Mr. Moskwa said. "Recently he proved his dedication by voluntarily coming in after duty-hours to assist in restoring the switch to service during a critical outage."

Another contractor was on site performing a hardware and software upgrade on the switch, and ran into some technical problems, Mr. Moskwa said. While the other contractor was able to restore some service, the switch was only running at 45 percent.
Mr. Stevens came in at 2 A.M. Sunday morning and was able to restore full functionality by 5:30 A.M.

"Mr. Stevens' dedication and professionalism has positively impacted the mission for more than 18 years," Mr. Moskwa said. "Team Whiteman is elite because of members like Mr. Stevens."
