Shingles Vaccine for age 60 and over is here at the Medical Group’s Immunizations Clinic Published Jan. 30, 2008 By 509th Medical Group WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. -- Whiteman AFB Immunizations Clinic is now offering Shingles vaccinations for all TRICARE beneficiaries that are age 60 and over. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends a one-time injection to prevent Shingles virus. Shingles, also know as Herpes Zoster, is a viral skin rash that is very painful and will often contain blisters. The rash usually lasts about 2 to 4 weeks. Shingles is caused by the Varicella Zoster virus; the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you've had Shingles, you are not a candidate for the vaccine because you've already developed protective immunity. The Shingles vaccine is approximately 50% effective in preventing Herpes Zoster and it may also reduce pain associated with Shingles virus. At least 1 million people in the United States get Shingles each year. For additional information on the Shingles vaccine, contact the Immunizations Clinic at 660-687-4304. Hours of operation are Monday - Thursdays from 0730-1200/1300-1600 and Fridays from 0830-1200/1300-1600. The clinic is closed the 2d Wednesday of every month for training.
