Shane Steiner, 509th Medical Operations Squadron, received the Whiteman Spirit Award from Brig. Gen. Garrett Harencak, 509th Bomb Wing commander, March 24. Col. Gloria Twilley, 509th Medical Group commander, and Lt. Col. Bill Eldridge, 13 Bomb Squadron commander, nominated Captain Steiner for the award. Captain Steiner demonstrated outstanding service as the sole Whiteman Air Force Base flight surgeon in an office normally staffed with four flight surgeons. Due to deployments, Captain Steiner was the only flight surgeon to scrub nearly 500 medical records consisting of more than 10,000 pages of data in preparation for the wing's Air Combat Command Nuclear Surety Staff Assistance Visit, Colonel Eldridge said. Capt Steiner volunteered more than 50 hours of personal time to ensure mission accomplishment--ACC lauded the base's personal reliability program as a model for the command. Simultaneously, he maintained the health more than 90 B-2 and T-38 pilots, as well as their dependants. During this short manning period, he was also the after-hours flight medicine doctor on-call. Despite his work load, he always maintained a friendly "can-do" attitude and outstanding military standards. "He is truly a 509er team player," Colonel Twilley said. She is proud to have Captain Steiner on her team of professionals.
