Back to school: Things to remember Published Aug. 13, 2008 By 509th Security Forces Crime Prevention Office WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. -- While going back to school may seem like a fashion show for who has the coolest backpack, the hottest shoes or the designer jeans, parents should also emphasize the importance of being safe. In addition to buying clothes and school supplies this fall, there are some other things to discuss with children to ensure their school year is fun and safe. Some ideas for discussion are: · Do not play in the street while walking, waiting for the bus or riding a bike to school. · Do not horse play at bus stops especially when the bus is approaching. · Do not get under the bus for any reason and always walk in front of the bus in the bus driver's line of sight · Never walk alone; find a friend or make a new friend to walk with. · Wear reflective clothing or backpacks to increase visibility. · Obey traffic lights and signs and properly cross streets at crosswalks. · Always wear helmets when riding bikes. · Ensure new teen drivers are aware of the rules of not talking on cell phones while driving and limiting the number of others allowed to ride to avoid distractions. · Children will be using the internet more for homework and discussing rules for internet use is a good idea. Talking to children is an important part of the back-to-school process. Make sure children are well supplied with the knowledge that will keep them safe.
