A 509th Bomb Wing company grade officer was recently recognized as one of the Air Force's top munitions officers with his selection for the 2008 Air Force Lt. Gen. Leo A. Marquez Award in the munitions or missile maintenance category.

1st Lt. Claus Fasting, a 509th Munitions Squadron munitions accountable systems officer, "is a tremendous example of how officers in today's Air Force have to master the art and science of technical leadership", said Maj. George Sherwood, 509th MUNS commander

"When I heard I won I was very surprised," said Lieutenant Fasting on receiving the maintenance community award.

The Lt. Gen. Leo A. Marquez award is reserved for personnel who demonstrate the highest degree of job performance, knowledge, efficiency and results.

With Air Combat Command representatives praising his section as "Best in Command" and "best seen to date," it is no surprise Lieutenant Fasting is being recognized for his achievements.

Under his leadership, the Special Weapons flight provided $27 million in training and test assets, a 100 percent on-time rate, and contributed to a record B-2 mission capable rate. During Whiteman's 2008 Nuclear Surety Inspection, his unit received top ratings in every area.

Lieutenant Fasting was responsible for 65 personnel and more than $200 Million of assets and equipment during day to day operations.

"The synergistic effects of leadership, expertise and teamwork ultimately culminated in Claus' recognition with the Air Force Lt. Gen. Leo A. Marquez Award and the entire 509th Munitions Squadron is proud of him," said Major Sherwood.

"The Marquez award itself is for individuals, but truly the MUNS team effort at Whiteman made it possible," said Lieutenant Fasting.
