Never leave a child alone in a car not even for a minute Published June 15, 2009 By Jeannine Johnson Family Advocacy Program WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. -- Left alone in a vehicle, even for a short time, a child is in danger of dehydration, injury, abduction or death. Never leave children unattended in or around an automobile Always put keys in a safe and secure place Keep vehicles locked at all times, even at home, and remind friends and neighbors to do the same. Unlocked cars pose a risk to children who are naturally curious and often fearless. Teach children the dangers of a car and let them know it is not a toy or playground. Make children as visible as possible. Place rear-facing car seats in the middle of the back seat. Establish a routine of checking the back seat every time exiting the car to ensure no one is left behind. Do not overlook sleeping infants. Place child's diaper bag or a small toy in the front seat to serve as a constant, visible reminder of child's presence in the car. Place purse, briefcase or other personal items in the back seat with the child to give an additional reason to check the back seat. Try to plan ahead when running errands. Run errands when spouse, trusted neighbor or friend can watch children. Remember to use the drive-through convenience provided by banks, dry cleaners, pharmacies, restaurants and other businesses. Use debit or credit cards at the gas pump. If a child is missing, check vehicles and trunks immediately.
