PUBLIC NOTICE: Five-year review completed at Whiteman

  • Published
The U.S. Air Force conducted the first five-year review for Whiteman Air Force Base (AFB) for sites on Base where contamination has the potential to affect human health. These sites were fully investigated and remediated to address the contamination about five years ago. The five-year review was recently performed to ensure that the remedy remains effective.

History
Whiteman AFB originally was constructed in 1942, and began operations that year. It was named the Sedalia Army Air Field. In 1955, the Base was renamed Whiteman AFB.

The Base has been in operation in various capacities including a training site for glider tactics and paratroopers; a bombardment wing; location for the Minuteman Intercontinental Ballistic Missile wing; and currently home of the B-2 Bomber. Routine Base activities in the past that supported the day-to-day operations, such as disposal of waste materials, contributed to the contamination.

Why was a five-year review conducted for these sites?
A five-year review is required by federal law to determine if the remedies are protecting human health and the environment from the groundwater contamination and waste left in place. The U.S. Air Force will continue to conduct reviews and issue a report every five years or as needed. The next five-year review is scheduled for 2014.

What are the results of a five-year review?
Shallow groundwater contamination at four sites was present at anticipated levels. The remedy is still protective of human health and the environment because the contaminated groundwater is not used for drinking water. Contamination concentrations are stable, so the U.S. Air Force will continue groundwater sampling every five years.

Buried waste is present at former landfill sites. Institutional controls, which protect people from uncontrolled contact with waste materials, remain in place. The U.S. Air Force will continue to complete annual inspections of the controls. Landfill cover erosion was observed at two former landfill sites and will be repaired.
