Talent competition entertains Whiteman community Published May 4, 2010 509h Force Support Squadron WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. -- The annual family and teen talent contest, this year dubbed "[ugt] you got talent," was held April 20, 2010, at the Whiteman Community Activities Center. Ms. Connie Koch, CAC manager, welcomed 21 performing acts in five of the competition categories. "[ugt] you got talent" is part of the Nell Buckley Performing Arts Series. The talent contest was held at base level and Air Force-wide in support of the Year of the Air Force Family. It provided an opportunity for families and youth to participate jointly in a recreational and educational activity, to contribute to developing creative expression, to provide the opportunity for the development of meaningful relationships with peers and adults, and to develop an appreciation of the arts. All performances were judged according to pre-set criteria provided by Air Force Services. The criteria utilized were: technical excellence--the degree of mastery of the particular performance medium; showmanship--physical presence, appearance, poise, creativity, sincerity and enthusiasm exhibited by the contestants; and treatment and interpretation of the material including costuming--style, originality, timely material and suitability being the chief considerations. Judges for the event were Ms. Laura Brunner, Whiteman Information, Tickets & Travel manager, Ms. Kim Wilson, CAC recreation aid and Ms. Lindsey Parker, Whiteman Elementary school teacher. Butterflies and nerves gave way to two hours of entertainment for a crowd of more than 150. From dancing, to singing, to bands playing music, talented Whiteman entertainers gave their all. The contest was a huge success and the auditorium was filled with enthusiastic participants and family supporters, Ms. Koch said "I hope to build on this success for next year's contest. We owe much to the volunteers who made this event so enjoyable for the Whiteman community," she said. First place winners in each category will be video-taped and forwarded to the Air Force level competition, where 1st, 2nd and 3rd-place winners in each category will receive awards along with gift cards. While the focus of the contest has always been on teens and families, an Active Duty category was added to the Whiteman event as well as Best in Show for Active Duty and the "[ugt] you got talent" competitors.
