The 509th Comptrollers Squadron Financial Management Tree Design and Implementation Team recently received the Under Secretary of Defense Financial Management Initiative Award May 5 at the 509th Bomb Wing Director of Staff meeting.

The award recognizes significant contributions of individuals or groups to the improvement of financial management.

"This was a great team effort by hardworking, dedicated professionals," said 509th CPTS Commander Lt. Col. Judson Fussell. "The tools they develop help the wing better manage our resources."

According to the team nomination form, they were awarded this honor for compiling and implementing an integrated set of budget and finance tools using off-the-shelf software.

The final product took cumbersome processes and replaced them with point and click capabilities for local commanders enabling immediate access to unit financial information.

The program offers a daily macro view of financial data to leaders and enables the resource community at all levels to provide prudent decision support regarding resource management across the wing.

"Much of what they do is behind the scenes, so I'm glad they are being recognized for their extra efforts," said Colonel Fussell.

The simplified program sparing time made the $152.8 million base budget easier to handle.

Replacing 13 hours of daily, individual, and organization downloads was one 15-minute session of central data collection, which will save more than two years of manual labor every year, installation-wide.

While going green and reducing the number of reams of paper used, the process increases data accuracy by eliminating manual entry.

It also reduced transaction input time freeing valuable time for financial analysis and decision support.

"I'm proud of my team and glad they received the recognition they deserve," said Mrs. Cindy Walters, 509th CPTS flight chief. "It was worth all the growing pains our team had over the process."
