The Special Olympics Missouri Board of Directors presented Team Whiteman with the Award of Excellence at a ceremony Jan. 15, during the SOMO annual awards luncheon in Osage Beach, Mo.

The Award of Excellence is the highest honor bestowed upon a company, business or group that has made a major impact to SOMO through their partnership.

Diane Brimer, Central Area Director, nominated this Air Force Global Strike Command base for the award.

"The impact most greatly felt is the interaction between the athletes and Airmen," said Ms. Brimer. "When at Whiteman, the Airmen put forth their best to make the events special for the athletes."

Whiteman initially hosted a SOMO bowling tournament in 1990 and has built a statewide partnership since.

"Whiteman has graciously hosted other tournaments; such as basketball, softball and volleyball," said Ms. Brimer. "The savings Whiteman has offered SOMO throughout the years has been substantial. They kindly donated the use of softball fields, the fitness center and other equipment; as well as volunteer umpires; which helped saved our organization $60,000."

Team Whiteman has donated more than 4,500 man hours preparing for events according to Ms. Brimer.

"We appreciate Team Whiteman coming out to support and volunteer their time help SOMO at these events," Ms. Brimer said. "What happens between the SOMO teams and the Airmen is no less than incredible ... Everything Whiteman does is top notch."

Greg Hauser, 509th Force Support Squadron community services flight, and Mike Orrison, retired from the 509th FSS, both committed key players who have coordinated efforts with SOMO for the past 20 years said they were honored to receive the award on behalf of Whiteman.

"The relationship between Whiteman and SOMO is outstanding," said Mr. Hauser. "For 20 years Whiteman personnel have stepped forward dedicating their off duty time personalizing a special bond with SOMO. Year after year active-duty, civilians and their family members have participated in events hosted by Team Whiteman. Mr. Orrison and I have enjoyed working closely with many organizations and personnel throughout the years and thank everyone for making the athletes feel welcome.

"It has been amazing to see the relationship develop statewide from what was once an idea more than 20 years ago." Mr. Hauser added.

Present to accept the award was Brig. Gen. Scott Vander Hamm, 509th Bomb Wing commander; Col. Eric Overturf, 442nd Fighter Wing commander; Col. Gregory Champagne, 131st Bomb Wing commander; Mr. Greg Hauser, 509th FSS community services flight and retired Mr. Mike Orrison, 509th FSS.
