The winter months are when people tend to get lazy and less energetic with their physical training, according to the 509th Medical Operations Squadron Health and Wellness Center staff.

In an effort to sustain fitness habits throughout the winter, the HAWC is encouraging Team Whiteman to join a program called Stepping/Running through the winter.

Stepping/Running through the winter's purpose is to encourage individuals to become more physically active throughout the winter season. The program began Dec. 1, 2011 and is scheduled to continue until Feb. 20.

More than 292 participants have signed up, so far and 2012 marks the program's fifth year.

In years prior, the Stepping/Running through the winter was more of a contest than an event. Instead of focusing on who can take the most steps or run the most miles in a 12 week period, this year's event is more participation oriented.

Incentives will be awarded to all individuals who achieve a certain number of miles once the event is finished.

"The event provides community awareness of fitness and encourages individuals not to let their fitness go by the wayside," said Stephanie Fraley, 509th MDOS HAWC dietician. "Keeping fitness on the forefront of our thinking will help prevent weight gain and prevent individuals from falling behind on their fitness routine."
