OSS stays undefeated Published Jan. 6, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Bryan Crane 509th Bomb Wing Public Affairs WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. -- The 509th Operations Support Squadron came into the night's matchup trying to extend their undefeated season against the 509th Maintenance Squadron at the Whiteman Air Force Base Fitness Center Jan. 3. The 509th OSS not only accomplished their goal but they did it in a big way. Both teams came out shooting in the first quarter but bad passing and bad shot selection slowed the game down early. The teams started to get in rhythm later in the first and the quarter ended with OSS leading 15-12. "Our motto is defense, defense, defense," said OSS team member Kenneth Scott. "We held the opponent to a low score and hit some key shots." That was exactly how they started the second quarter with a couple of big steals and shots. Though MXS started to cut it close, OSS closed the half with a 31-22 lead. The second half started and OSS came out strong looking for another victory. Great ball movement to go along with their strong defense opened the game up to a 44-28 lead with only three minutes left in the third quarter. MXS however, kept their game together and tried to fight back but the defense of OSS was too good and the quarter ended with OSS on top 52-32. The fourth quarter started similar to the third as MXS kept battling by being resilient with offensive rebounds but they couldn't capitalize on easy baskets to get back in the game. Scott was key in leading the charge in fourth quarter to finish out the game. "The key to the game was defense," Scott said "Everybody can make buckets but not everybody can play defense." OSS closed the game out with the victory by a final score of 65-36. Scott said he was confident that his team can finish the season with a championship. "Everything is a possibility, as long as we keep defense in mind," he said. If OSS continues to play tough defense and have great teamwork it's going to be hard for any team to defeat them.
