Welcome New Whiteman Spouse,
I’m excited to welcome you to Whiteman Air Force Base (AFB), home of the B-2 Stealth Bomber and the 509th Bomb Wing! Whiteman AFB is centrally located in the serene town of Knob Noster, Missouri, which is blanketed with lush, green, rolling hills. If you are looking for more beyond small town charm, the bustling Kansas City metropolis is only 60 miles away with offerings of amazing food, sports, and museum attractions. Other nearby cities include Warrensburg, which is home to the University of Central Missouri (UCM) and Sedalia, which attracts approximately 400,000 visitors annually to the State Fair.
Whiteman AFB started out as the home to the Sedalia Army Air Field in 1942. It was inactivated in 1947 and then reactivated in 1952 when the 340th Bombardment Wing was activated under Strategic Air Command. It officially became Whiteman AFB in 1955 in honor of 2nd Lieutenant George A. Whiteman who was one of the first American Airmen killed in combat in World War II during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The mission shifted in the 1960s from aircraft to intercontinental ballistic missiles with the 351st Strategic Missile Wing and back to aircraft with the delivery of the first B-2 on 17 December 1993. The 509th Bomb Wing’s mission is to “Execute Nuclear Operations and Global Strike…. anytime, anywhere” and we do this by prioritizing readiness, processes, and communities‒which is where you fit in!
Our Airmen, civilians, contractors, and families are what make our mission successful. It is your commitment that underpins our lethality and your dedication that serves as the heartbeat for our wing’s global power projection capability. We simply could not do this mission without you! This is why we continuously strive to ensure you have a smooth transition to Whiteman AFB. We encourage you to download the USAF Connect App and add Whiteman AFB to your favorites. This app is intended to consolidate base information and, when push notifications are enabled, you will receive pertinent base updates direct to your phone.
