Three different Air Force Global Strike Command bombers will conduct a first-of-its-kind trifecta flyover during the National Anthem performance at the fifty-fifth Super Bowl, Feb. 7, over Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
“We are very excited for Team Whiteman to lead the formation Air Force Global Strike Command bombers,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Jeffrey Schreiner, 509th Bomb Wing commander at Whiteman Air Force Base. “The opportunity to showcase assurance to our allies, flexibility and our commitment to the nation is a true honor.”
The bomber flyover, will feature:
- B-2 Spirit from Whiteman AFB, Missouri
- B-1B Lancer from Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota
- B-52 Stratofortress from Minot AFB, North Dakota
The B-2 will take off for the Super Bowl LV flyover, piloted by Capt. Sarah “Gucci” Kocuiba, from Whiteman AFB, join up with the other aircraft for the flyover, and return to base following the event, demonstrating the flexibility of AFGSC’s bombers and their ability to deploy anywhere in the world from the continental United States.
The U.S. Air Force performs close to 1,000 flyovers a year and serve as a way to showcase the capabilities of our aircraft while also inspiring patriotism and future generations of aviation enthusiasts. These flyovers done are at no additional cost to the taxpayer and serve as fully functional training missions for our pilots, maintainers and ground control teams.
The Super Bowl LV flyover will feature more than 267 tons of American Air Power. Together, in combat operations these aircraft would be capable of delivering 185,000 pounds of payload.
On today’s football field:
From one wing to the other, a B-1 Lancer would span from Chief’s goal line almost to midfield -- 137 feet, 45 yards.
Sitting on NFL logo at mid-field, the ends of the two wings of a B-52 Stratofortress would span to each team’s Red Zone—185 feet, 61 yards.
If you aligned the three aircraft up nose to tail, they would span from End Zone to End Zone.
Supersonic: B-1 is the Air Force fastest U.S. Bomber, capable of sub and supersonic speeds. Max speed of a B-1 Lancer is over 900 miles per hour (Mach 1.2).
Bad to the BONE: The B-1's speed and superior handling characteristics allow for seamless integration into military operations. Along with it’s substantial payload and long loiter time it is no wonder the B-1B has been a key element in strike forces and flying more than 12,000 sorties in the last 20 years.
Record Holder: The B-2 Spirit stealth bomber holds the record for the longest Aerial Combat Mission in History; on a 44-hour mission before then making another 30-hour flight back to home station. That’s a total of more than 70 consecutive hours!
Moving Fast: The B-2 Spirit’s maximum speed is about 630 miles per hour (Mach 0.8) and cruises 40,000 feet above the ground at about 560 miles per hour (Mach 0.77).
Age Is Just a Number: The B-52 Stratofortress has been the backbone of America’s bomber forces since it entered the service in 1955. The youngest B-52s still in active service are about 57 years old; that’s more than 66 years of unparalleled capabilities in regards to range and payload delivery!

Whiteman Air Force Base pilots are scheduled to fly over medical facilities in Kansas City, Missouri, April 28 to honor and express Team Whiteman’s gratitude for all medical and healthcare professionals, essential employees and volunteers in the fight against COVID-19.
The flyover will include a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber assigned to the 509th Bomb Wing accompanied by A-10 Thunderbolt IIs from the U.S. Air Force Reserve’s 442nd Fighter Wing and T-38 Talon’s assigned to the 13th Bomb Squadron, which will pass, in sequence, over CenterPoint Medical Center, Children’s Mercy Hospital North andSouth, Lee’s Summit Medical Center, St. Luke’s Plaza, Research Medical Center, Western Missouri Medical Center and Bothwell Regional Health Center on Tuesday. In case of inclement weather, the flight will be postponed to April 29.
