2/25/2010 - WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. -- Senior Airman Edwin M. Blackford III, an active duty Airman assigned to the 509th Security Forces Squadron at Whiteman AFB, was killed in a two-vehicle accident near Knob Noster, Mo., Feb. 15, 2009.

The accident occurred at 11 p.m. on Hwy 23 about one mile north of the Air Force base. Also involved in the accident were two active duty Airmen assigned to another unit at Whiteman AFB, who were on their way to the base at the time. Their vehicle was disabled in the head-on collision, and both were transferred to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

Johnson County Coroner pronounced Airman Blackford deceased at the scene. The Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

"It is a tragic loss for all of Whiteman AFB and especially for the security forces where he was assigned," said Brig. Gen. Robert Wheeler, the base commander.

Airman Blackford joined the Air Force in June 2006, and was assigned to Whiteman AFB, his only permanent duty station, in November of 2006. Airman Blackford had deployed to Iraq for an extended period in 2008, where the U.S. Army decorated him for being instrumental in the Global War on Terrorism.

Airman Blackford's family resides in Iowa. He will be laid to rest near his place of birth in Boelus, Neb., Saturday, with full military honors.
