Air Force Ball commemorates 60th year
WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. -- Left to right: Brig. Gen. Greg Biscone, 509th Bomb Wing commander, retired Chief Master Sgt. Mel Bockelman and Airman Basic James Williams, 509th Medical Support Squadron, cut the cake at the Air Force Ball Aug. 18. It is an Air Force tradition to have the most senior ranking Airman and the youngest Airman cut the cake. Chief Bockelman is wearing his Army Air Corps Class “A” uniform with the Eisenhower battle jacket, which was designed by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower during World War II. This year’s ball commemorated the Air Force’s 60th Anniversary, and was held at Elliott Union on the University of Central Missouri campus. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. Samuel Park)
